7/2010-MAYBE A FACILITATOR might be provided soon to start communications between community groups and the State Government who own the 110ha of COMMON land zoned for community purposes. . 6/2010-EXCITMENT LOST - as communications have dried up with the Works Department even thought they advised 18/9/2009 "Works Dept will be iniating a thorough consultation process with all relevant stakeholders including Friends of Oxley Common and Oxley Creek Catchment" 2/2010-EXCITEMENT WAS GROWING. Something is afoot. The State Government Works Department has advised us that they have a draft Future Community Stratey written. What will that be? Only time will tell. The old DPI Research Farm now called The Oxley Creek Common was deemed surplus to requirement in 1998 and the Community has been waiting 11 years now to be taken seriously re our thoughts on the future of the COMMON. Plus-PROGRESSING TOWARDS ESTABLISHING A COMMUNITY FARM We submitted a proposal for a Community Farm on the Common to the Qld Govt Works Dept and Brisbane City Council in April 2009. It is avilable on home page to download. Brisbane City Council say the land is contaminated! We will chase this up as probably it refers to only a small portion and maybe the ex DPI cattle dip not decommissioned. ALSO Does anyone know how the community can find funds or go about retrofittig the gifted house sitting on the high land which presently has no stumps under it? We have in our hands a letter from the Brisbane Markets Limited stating that this house was indeed gifted to the community. AND does anyone know who the players might be to bring about some small sustainable cottages on Medway Street which backs on to the Common and is part of the Common. This area could be used for social housing. The land is zoned for community purposes. ALSO We will beCONTINUING TO NURTURE OUR TREES surrounding Pelican Lagoon and continue to RUN BIRD WALKS. Hopefully too Professor Hugh Possingham will continue to monitor numbers and species of birds visiting the Common which he has done wonderfully well over the past few years. PAST LARGE PROJECTS HAVE BEEN:- 2007 & 2008 - TREE PLANTING AND NURTURING OUR TREES surrounding Pelican Lagoon continues to take place with thanks to the initial help fromConservation Volunteers Australia which is now being supplemented by Friends of Oxley Common's volunteers. - Friends of Oxley Common have received and now completed tasks re their federal water grant funds of $29,352.94 to rehabilitate Pelican Lagoon - (Click this link to see history & pictures) 2007 - A Restoration Plan for Pelican Lagoon A plan for the restoration and monitoring of the wetlands surrounding Pelican Lagoon has now been supplied by Cassandra Bouna - an outstanding environmental restoration student.
